ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines research on the mechanisms underlying Relative Age Effects (RAEs) and focusses on what potential solutions have been recommended/attempted to date to counter RAEs. These include (1) awareness, (2) average team age and relative age index (RAEi), (3) variation and or rotation of cut-off dates in a season, (4) different cut-off dates for different sports or for school and sports, (5) age quotas, (6) classification based on maturity status, (7) classification based on chronological age and biological age, (8) classification based on skill testing, (9) structural and rule changes, (10) delayed talent detection and selection, and (11) age grading. Pros and cons of each potential solution are presented.
