ABSTRACT

In this essay I discuss greed as a form of extremism. Starting out with a definition of greed distilled from colloquial and academic sources, I discuss why greed can be considered extreme, followed by a historical overview of one of our oldest social constructs. A review of the literature on greed from a broad range of disciplines, including psychology, economics, and management follows. I offer an explanation of why different disciplines interpret and value greed in vastly different ways leading up to the multilevel model of greed as extremism. The essay concludes with some possible solutions to mitigate the problems caused by greed.
