ABSTRACT

This chapter is an examination of the role of silence in conjunction with film concepts such as cinematography, mise-en-scène and soundtracking, and how an understanding of such can be applied to the writing of prose fiction to add emotional and psychological depth. A range of fiction texts are analysed for their use of silence within and alongside established filmic techniques. Whilst references are occasionally made to specific films and film-makers, the focus here is very much on instructive examples of successful filmic writing on the page.
