ABSTRACT

As the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) increase in scope and fidelity, serious questions arise concerning the intersection of AI, psychology, and ethics. This burgeoning field of inquiry must address structural implications in the design of AI, as well as the ethical application of AI with special consideration for the psychological impact of the users. This chapter lays the groundwork for the importance of including ethical considerations in the design and implementation of technologically supported education, decision support, and leadership training. Here we describe how we identified specific areas in need of consideration within this domain, citing colleagues who are conducting research or advocating for policy standards in areas such as the quality of reciprocal human–AI interactions; the psychological effect of emerging social relationships between people and AI agents and systems; and how AI can support expert, creative, and ethical decision making in both people and virtual human agents.
