ABSTRACT

Many elements of intangible cultural heritage are related to religion. In Japan, however, there are a number of problems in designating intangible cultural heritage of religious significance as cultural properties under the government's protection system. This chapter will examine the case examples of the Shunie ritual of Todaiji Temple and Gion Festival in Kyoto, and discuss the present state and issues regarding the protection of intangible cultural heritage related to religion. The situation of tangible cultural heritage related to religion will also be reviewed.
