ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to develop a clearer understanding of who the diaspora is and the economic role they can play. The first section provides an overview of the diaspora in terms of profiles, numbers, features and trends which have changed its composition and profile. It sets out the reasons why diaspora as an important economic contributor to countries of origin needs to be considered. The second section outlines the manner in which diaspora has and continues to contribute economically to their home countries and the countries they reside in. This section focuses on the interlinkages between diaspora and trade, diaspora and investment, diaspora and entrepreneurship, diaspora and skills and finally diaspora and philanthropy. It draws on country-specific examples and statistical analysis. It considers the track record of some diaspora engagement tools. The final section focuses on where the future potential of diaspora lies and what needs to be put in place to make this a reality. It offers several recommendations that could leverage the role of diaspora going forward.
