ABSTRACT

Immigrant professionals want to share their time and expertise from their new homes. As a practitioner and not an academic, I have defined knowledge remittances as the highly technical, scientific or professional know-how and expertise that diaspora professionals can share with their communities of heritage. Brain drain becomes brain gain precisely because diaspora professionals do not move home, but instead channel their experience, learning, social capital and more to their countries-of-heritage remotely. This chapter considers how technology may be used to channel knowledge remittances at scale. It illustrates this with the example of Localized.World, a platform that offers access to career guidance, role models and expertise from global professionals who share language, culture and roots – drawing on diaspora professionals.
