ABSTRACT

Throughout its 15 years of life, the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) has built a model of attention to the Mexican diaspora. Strategic alliances with actors and institutions in Mexico and abroad are a key piece in this model for the financing and operation of community activities carried out by the IME. Due to the concentration of the Mexican diaspora in the United States, most of the IME’s community activities are carried out in that country. Through the principle of shared responsibility, the IME carries out transnational public policies that allow it to involve binational actors in the operation of community activities that have benefits and positive impacts for the diaspora. This model has allowed the empowerment of members of the Mexican communities, but above all, it has allowed consuls and ambassadors who participate in the activities of the IME an instrument that facilitates the construction of bridges of collaboration with authorities and relevant actors in their jurisdictions as well as the construction of bridges of understanding and a shared agenda with Mexican communities.
