ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) can be used as an educational tool in business schools to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The purpose is to gain an understanding of how effective these principles are in guiding sustainable curriculum and practices for future business leaders. Background information regarding the development of PRME from the UN Global Compact, the implementation by business schools and an overview of the literature researching PRME in tourism is provided. This chapter discusses the creation of the PRME, how they have been applied and an analysis of their results. While PRME lack uniformity in its implementation and evaluation of sustainable curriculum and practices in business schools, there does appear to be an increased awareness and effort made to work towards improving and carrying out activities and policy focused on sustainability. In order to tackle the sustainability issues related to the tourism industry, particularly overtourism, future leaders need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to develop long-term strategies for this industry. Examples of the implementation of the PRME are included to provide an overview as to how they have been utilised globally in business schools. With negative impacts on the environment, culture and economy due to unsustainable management practices, particularly within the tourism industry, a focus on educating emerging leaders on the importance of sustainable growth is imperative for future success.
