ABSTRACT
Asian Americans have historically suffered from societal perceptions and stereotypical portrayals in media and on the stage. The rise of anti-Asian sentiment and violence demands the evaluation of our impact on Asian Americans and how to participate in creating more truthful, dynamic representation. This chapter examines the history, initiatives, and implications of casting processes related to those who identify as East and Southeast Asian Americans and how portrayals in society are related to portrayals in the media. From a US-centered perspective, I guide acting teachers, directors, and casting directors towards better decision-making processes with regard to more equitable casting practices.
