ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to interrogate the hallmarks of children’s sense of space and place within dark tourism. When encountering dark tourism sites, children present interpreters with new challenges and experiences based on how they interpret the information provided and the spaces encountered. For example, children may not comprehend the symbolism of architectural features but explore the surfaces and structures through touch and play (which, in turn, may upset adults). Therefore, understanding the importance of this interaction must be taken into account when planning visits and preparing dark tourism sites and interpretation.
