ABSTRACT

Beyond age and gender, one must consider the tourism experience of a child with a disability or mental health condition. While tourism may improve the physical and mental health of children and reinvigorate family relationships, studies also reveal the challenges facing families traveling with a child who has sensory or processing challenges. In response to the increase in autism, for example, websites post reviews of museums and amusement parks offering “sensory-friendly” experiences. At least one international credentialing agency (International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards) now promotes a “Certified Autism Center” certification process for resorts and amusement parks.
