ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses issues regarding tourism and tourism development, governance and sustainability in The Bahamas. These areas have a special relationship between visitors, the industry, the environment and local communities. Tourism and tourism development are important impelling causes that move the Bahamian economy and society. The chapters are written by several authors with differing expertise and differing views. They all however provide some new perspectives into the workings of the country’s most important industry, tourism, and additionally, provide insight into different strategies this small island nation used to remain relevant as a tourist destination. Finally, the chapter provides university students especially those in tourism, business and the social sciences disciplines with a robust and intellectual discussion on matters of sustainability, governance and development from the perspective of small and resilient multi-island destination.
