ABSTRACT

This project sought to measure the impact of tourism development on three small island communities in The Bahamas. It examined the islands of Abaco, Bimini and Exuma where large-scale developments were introduced to measure the impact these tourist developments have had on the economy, culture and lives of the local inhabitants. Data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The findings revealed that most of the respondents had a favourable outlook on tourism development in their island. Respondents also noted there were drawbacks such as the impact of migration, local and foreign especially regarding employment, segregation of tourist from locals and communities, destruction of the natural environment and changes to the built environment. The study indicates that the information gathered is valuable and need to be replicated in other islands that are identified for anchor projects in the future.
