ABSTRACT
The Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25) is a populist radical-left transnational movement launched in 2016. As a transnational political movement on the radical-left with electoral ambitions, its unique ideological nature deserves greater attention in academic research. By zooming in on the case of DiEM25, this chapter focuses on explaining the difficulty faced by the transnational radical left movement in European politics. We argue that DiEM25’s lack of electoral success across the European Union is multifaceted, ranging from the complex nature of the transnational organisation that criss-crosses national boundaries, to ideological shortcomings and complexities. Hence, it would be hard for DiEM25 to convey their core ideological strategies and policies. Therefore, this chapter makes an important contribution in helping to further understand DiEM25, the contemporary radical-left and the wider debate on transnational political/social movements in contemporary European Politics.
