ABSTRACT

Ever since the popular uprising in January 2011, the ultras (notorious groups of football fans) have found themselves caught up in the field of oppositional politics. This chapter investigates how they fared under the counter-revolutionary period that set in with the emergence of Abdel Fattah al-Sissi as the new strongman since June 2013. It argues that, rather than an organisation, the ultras is ultimately a fan culture that is passed on organically. In order to surface, the ultras only need to come together in a celebratory fashion. For this reason, authorities can only suppress them at the cost of public celebration itself.
