ABSTRACT

Accessibility is often approached as an afterthought, instead of an integral part of the creative process. Applying principles of universal design is key to enhancing access and inclusion. This Short examines provocative and creative accessibility designs in theatre by utilising touch. The impact of specific tactile tools used in four theatrical performances for improving accessibility and engagement as well as enhancing the overall experience of every audience member is also examined. Based on attendees’ feedback and observation, most – and not only those with disabilities – enjoyed the tactile tools, suggesting their further development and broader use might enhance the theatrical experience.
