ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the scientific method and its development. History of science teaches new ways of thinking, movement and progress of civilisation and places scientific inventors in the context of social evolution. Major emphasis is put on Athenian ways of thinking and its influence on modern science. The scientific revolution of the renaissance period, the era of Galileo and the Newton era leading to the Industrial Revolution as well as the era of mechanics, steam power and electricity are chronicled. History of some breakthrough disciplines in science are discussed. Biological fundamentals are also put into perspective leading to biotechnology. The emergence of ICT revolution leading to World Wide Web and social media has been briefly discussed with its impact on society. Finally, it is shown that interdisciplinarity has been one of the keys to scientific development all through the history.
