ABSTRACT

Suśruta made elaborate efforts in surgery. Instrumentology also developed during his time. The eight branches of Āyurveda have been detailed in the Suśruta-saṃhitā. The entire compilation has been divided into 6 sthānas (volumes). Suśruta mentioned sixty types of management for overall surgical treatment. In the Suśruta-saṃhitā, the dressing of a wound, bandages and their indications, materials to be used for stitching a traumatic wound have been described. Two types of instruments, i.e. sharp and blunt, are clearly mentioned. Each surgical procedure was a phased programme (trividha karma) comprising three stages. Eight types of surgical procedures are described in Suśruta-saṃhitā. Suśruta has described verities of ear, nose, lip remonstrative surgery, which is exactly what present day plastic surgeons call pedicle grafting.
