ABSTRACT
A landscape approach means consideration of the landscape as a holistic unit in planning and decision-making for governance policies, development aid, conservation interventions, and others. This kind of approach has been shown to be effective for contributing to achievement of environmental goals, social equity, and human well-being, and has been institutionalized in a number of ways, including by the Satoyama Initiative, a global effort toward “societies in harmony with nature” using landscape approaches. Landscape approaches have been put into practice to improve urban-rural connectivity. This chapter provides an overview of the landscape approach in both the global and local contexts, with examples of the use of gardens and corridors to improve nature connectivity and site-designation schemes in and around the city of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.
