ABSTRACT

In a field that is predominantly White and has foundations that seemingly neglect the historical and contemporary contributions of Black and people of color (POC) professionals, sometimes it has been difficult to find or create space that takes into account the unique experiences as a racial minority practitioner and supervisor. A lack of mentorship as well as supervisors who may be sensitive to the needs of exploring race in supervision as well as with clients are indicated as being impediments to professional growth. The chapter also offers that in sex therapy supervision, consideration is given to discussions that acknowledge the convergence of race and sexuality. Finally, the goal of this chapter is to share some reflections about serving as a Black sex therapist as well as to offer some insight into my experience as a supervisor.
