ABSTRACT

The main goal of this chapter is to address how the migration process impacts the sexual expression of Latin American and Middle Eastern cisgender women who migrate to the United States. These expressions are linked to various factors that influence the behaviors and preferences of the women. Acknowledging that cultures around the globe have unique views on sexuality, depending on the location where the individual comes from, allows us to understand that a change in geographical location, such as migration, can significantly present new challenges and change one’s views on sexuality. Migration experiences can vary depending on the reason why individuals migrate to specific places. Some migration processes can be traumatic and drastically change the way migrant populations express their sexual selves.

As mental health and sex therapists, an intersectional approach is essential in order to explore the complex layers of individuals and couples who come to sex therapy. This implies addressing your client’s needs by learning about their culture to allow them to build the trust they need to heal and grow.
