ABSTRACT

The teaching profession in Cyprus has been undergoing some very deep changes in the last twenty years as a result of some very important developments which have affected the political, economic, social and cultural life of Cyprus. The second development was the intensification of political life in Cyprus and the active involvement of teachers in it. Political feelings in Cyprus have been very strong ever since independence and active involvement in politics has been the general practice. The teachers’ pressure on the Government to change the law and recognize their political rights has recently been intensified, especially after the government has failed to take measures against teachers and civil servants who had defied the law and had stood up as candidates. During a long time of the British Administration in Cyprus primary education was under the colonial government control (appointment of teachers, content, books), while secondary schools were communal and opposed every government control.
