ABSTRACT

Teachers certainly responded to the opportunities, and large numbers sought further qualifications through courses at tertiary institutions and through in-service education. This chapter describes the ways in which teachers in Australia were able to undertake such continuing education, the perceived strengths and deficiencies of this experience, and considers some recent developments which suggest desirable future directions for in-service education involving College resources. What emerged was the National Professional Development Programs organised at State and Regional levels catering for teachers from State, Catholic and private school systems. The Commonwealth Minister for Education recently requested the Commonwealth Schools Commission and the Tertiary Education Commission to conduct a joint review of teacher education in Australia. The post World War II period in Australia was characterized by rapid population growth. The chapter surveys the broad Australian experience of in-service education of teachers and describes recent developments at a National, State and local level.
