ABSTRACT

We present a review of sociophonetic research from the perspective of Arabic. The review provides a guide for researchers of Arabic interested in sociophonetics, considering data collection, data analysis, and a range of theoretical and applied issues informed by such work. We highlight issues where Arabic presents particular challenges for those methodologies and theoretical developments that have largely been developed in the United States and Europe, and via a dominant focus on mainstream European languages. The review thus contributes to the small but growing body of work focusing on sociophonetic variation in diverse languages and communities.
