ABSTRACT

This chapter explores sociophonetic research on the Spanish language. After a quantitative review of the field by country, it examines early sociophonetic research (1890s–1980s) with a focus on its origins, influences, and methods. It then examines Spanish-language sociophonetics as a whole in terms of its central research questions, key theories and frameworks, and methods and approaches. It then presents a sociophonetic study of Chilean Spanish vowels, before closing with some reflections on the future of the discipline.
