ABSTRACT

Various kinds of KSL (Korean as a second language) assessments are administered to track student learning and progress, including proficiency tests, achievement tests, placement tests, and diagnostic tests. In this chapter, we focus on the discussion of (a) the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), the most widely used KSL proficiency test; (b) current practices of achievement tests among KSL institutions in Korea; and (c) previous research on KSL assessment. The discussion of TOPIK includes its proficiency scale, format, and administration. Achievement tests are examined based on a survey conducted with nine university-based KSL institutes in Korea. Studies of KSL assessment reviewed in this chapter were searched through the Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), an academic research search system operated by the Korea Education and Research Information Service.
