ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the acquisition of Korean syntax and semantics by L1 English and heritage speakers. After presenting an overview of Korean grammar, focusing on the syntax–semantics mismatch between L1 English and L2 Korean, we survey recent KSL literature investigating the acquisition of clause structure; case, number, and topic markings on nominals; relative clauses; honorifics; tense and aspect markings on verbals, and wh-questions in L2 Korean. Influential hypotheses in SLA, such as the subset principle, the shared structure hypothesis, the feature (re)assembly hypothesis, and the interface hypothesis, are examined in light of Korean acquisition data.
