ABSTRACT

The presidency of Donald Trump demonstrates the fragility of democratic norms and institutions, and the allure of fascist politics, even within an established democratic republic. However, Trump’s autocratic and divisive leadership styles are an outgrowth, rather than a cause, of a broader political culture and a populace deeply divided against itself. If fascist politics rest on nationalism, authoritarianism, militancy, and a narrative of victimhood and stolen glory, the chapters in this book illustrate the cultural seeds of fascism dispersed throughout American life, from rap music to fashion, schools, sports, online communities, museums, monuments, and commemorative events. The final chapters explore tactics of resistance within the Trump era that creatively reanimate sentiments of hope, joy, and love, and promises of justice and equality.
