ABSTRACT

With his unique perspective as an experienced media technician, Tom Cullen provides a structured approach to realizing the successful display of time-based media art. With a focus on practical requirements, he advises on the criteria to consider, mistakes to prevent, and crucial documentation to create. This chapter offers a personal insight into how he approach the installation of time-based media and how he deal with specific requirements of a whole exhibition or a single artwork so that the installation is a success. Equipment is a major topic to deal with in the presentation of time-based media. Most artists have specific equipment they prefer, which they have previously used and show the work at its best. Sometimes an artwork will travel with its dedicated equipment. In these rare cases, that equipment may be bespoke or has been bought by the institution or collector when the work was first purchased.
