ABSTRACT

The roundtable discussion, held on January 27 and February 22, 2021, brings together seven professionals who are involved in producing, distributing, collecting, curating, and conserving media art. In conversation, they share their perspectives and explore together how they collaborate with living media artists to support the sustainable collection of media art. A collector or institution that wants to own, install, or conserve a media artwork will have to know enough about the technology, inherent change, and preservation risks to pose the right questions and ask for the necessary physical and digital materials. An artist has to understand the preservation needs that require certain information, preservation formats, or other deliverables. In the case of Daniel’s work, the computer or the technology or even the programming language isn’t that important, as long as the idea of the artwork, the algorithm that runs the artwork, is conserved.
