ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about three initiatives that engage creators, caretakers, and their allies and are aimed at the preservation of moving image and time-based media collections: Audiovisual Preservation Exchange Community (APEX), Community Archiving Workshop (CAW), and XFR Collective. The initiatives recognize the roles of institutional, non-institutional, and hybrid collections and bring to the foreground creators and small or under-resourced organizations that do not necessarily frequent art conservation circles. They play an important role in disseminating information about conservation and preservation and in promoting do-it-yourself (DIY) strategies. XFR Collective members understand best practices, learned through their education and experiences but also the realities of their partners’ limited resources. With this in mind, XFR Collective focuses not only on the physical materials of a collection but also, if not more importantly, the people and stories behind the collections.
