ABSTRACT
Social innovation has often been generated by enterprises belonging to the fourth sector. An approach that can help advance the people understanding on social innovation is the solidarity economy, a perspective that addresses social challenges faced in Mexico. This chapter therefore aims to present solidarity economy as a framework to address social innovation in the context of the fourth sector in Mexico. It examines the concept of social innovation and its importance in the framework of solidarity economy and the fourth sector. The chapter presents a brief conclusion on the solidarity economy framework as part of the fourth sector. An understanding of how the solidarity economy naturally fits and strengthens the development of the fourth sector is given in the following section. It introduces the solidarity economy to better understand social innovation in the fourth sector in Mexico. As solidarity economy initiatives advance original social innovation, there are challenges ahead.
