ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we focus on the importance of the local context when infusing Meaningful PE into community-based teacher education practice, which involves educating new teachers in their current community context as opposed to requiring them to travel to a university located elsewhere (typically large cities). We illustrate our pedagogical approach to Meaningful PE with Indigenous and rural populations in several teacher education programs in northern Alberta, Canada. We share examples of our teacher education practices and pre-service teachers’ experiences, including our failures and successes, some initial recommendations, and emerging questions based on our experience to date in these complex and diverse settings.
