ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I show how I use the features of Meaningful PE to inform my professional judgement and decision-making. The features have helped me develop a teaching metaphor, which I call the Equalizer. The Equalizer is an in-the-moment reflection framework, which can support a PE teacher in attending to the creation of meaningful experiences. This is done by refocusing questions about the ‘why’ and the ‘what’ of their observations and can therefore guide how they intervene and interact with students within a PE lesson. I provide examples of how I have used this metaphor in my own teaching practice in secondary school PE, how I have learned to see the features as integrated, and how a focus on an individual feature allows the approach to be adapted to different activities, learners, and learning objectives.
