ABSTRACT

Disability advocates and disability studies scholars alike are lauding Jim Lebrecht's and Nicole Newnham's groundbreaking work that was executive produced, among others, by Michelle and Barack Obama. The film features archival footage of Camp Jened, a past summer camp for people with disabilities. The interplay of home videos from campers, narration of Lebrecht's and Newnham's script, and interviews with former campers demonstrate the social capital that was generated through the camp. When the teaser trailer was released in November 2020 for Australian singer-songwriter Sia's directorial-debut film Music, it met with instant backlash from disability rights' advocates. Representation matters for many reasons, not the least of which is because representation is a powerful way marginalized groups can gain access to our media-saturated society. Early media and disability research focused on how media represented people with disabilities in problematic ways that reinforced negative stereotypes.
