ABSTRACT

This collaborative essay considers the first decade (2008–2018) of work by the US-based performance company, Every house has a door, as performance philosophy. The chapter addresses performances by the company according to four categories of philosophical engagement: methods (collaborative methods of generating performances); materials (performance materials, physical or conceptual); structures (performance time and space structure); and parallel (discourses alongside performances). Through the polyvocal essay, readers encounter the rich weave of source materials engaged in the company’s practice from Jay Wright and Charles Reznikoff, to Fanny Howe, Hélène Cixous, and Dusan Makavejev. Within this weave, the aims of performance and philosophy emerge in alignment as – among other things – practices leading to the reconciliation of diverse knowledges.
