ABSTRACT

Emotions sit at the centre of our human lives – they bring texture and colour to experiences, and without them, life would be stripped of meaning and purpose. But emotions also bring pain, suffering, and difficulties too. Emotion regulation – the ability (or inability) to engage in a variety of strategies to healthily and helpfully manage one’s emotions – is a process central in all therapies. This chapter will outline the concept of emotion regulation, emotion dysregulation, and discuss a model of emotion regulation that can be used in CFT to assess, formulate, and help clients build healthy, compassion-based, emotion regulation strategies.
