ABSTRACT
From the modest beginnings of a newly established colonial community some fifteen thousand kilometres from the European heart of Western Civilisation, an operatic culture grew and flourished in Melbourne in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. This chapter traces the historical roots of this cultural phenomenon while also highlighting the factors underpinning the establishment of an emotional regime that was characterised by ambition, hope and confidence.
