ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces ‘intersectionality’ as a field of study that emerged in the space between social movements and the academy to draw attention to the complexity of multiple and interlocking forms of oppression. It discusses the importance of intersectional analyses for the study of international relations, as articulated both by activists and scholars. The first section of the chapter discusses intersectionality as a field of study generally and provides an overview of its genealogy within International Relations. The second section discusses the development and application of intersectional frameworks that are better able to interrogate complex power dynamics in international relations and further discusses how intersectionality can be used as a methodology for studying world politics.
