ABSTRACT

During the 2020 International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, Lucinda Coleman was commissioned by Edith Cowan University, Australia, to create a contemporary dance film to represent the work of health care professionals. The choreographer’s intention was to create an interdisciplinary piece which playfully challenged stereotypes of nurses and midwives through authentic storytelling and reflexive account. The genre of screendance provided an innovative space to creatively portray stories of health care professionals. The choreographic commission offered an opportunity to cross-pollinate performing arts with the health sector and develop new, experimental dance work which generated unexpected insight into the health profession through nuanced performance.
