ABSTRACT

Autistic responsivity to psychological treatment has been widely discussed, with much focus on the potential challenges an autism diagnosis may present to those with forensic risks (Dein & Woodbury-Smith, 2010; Higgs & Carter, 2015; Melvin et al., 2017; Murphy, 2010a). Difficulties with social interaction, communication and the repetitive or restrictive patterns of behaviour associated with the cognitive and behavioural profile of autism may hinder the achievement of positive treatment outcomes in autistic offenders. As the evidence-base for interventions with people with autism who break the law develops, there are a number of considerations and adaptions which can be taken into account when working with offenders with autism.
