ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a conceptual framework that situates global leadership and environmental management in the context of various global market, environmental, and social forces by building on a responsible leadership framework. The authors argue that such a framework is needed because there exists no single theoretical perspective that accounts for the various psycho-socioeconomic factors affecting actual leadership behavior in the realm of environmental management. This framework bridges the gap between micro-level attitudes toward environmentalism and macro-level strategies that have global consequences. The author thus draws from responsible leader orientations and upper-echelons theory to explain how the individual-level attitudes of leaders translate into firm-level stances toward environmentalism. The interrelationships between responsible global leadership and environmental management practices help to situate potential behavioral responses to these tensions, challenges, and opportunities.
