ABSTRACT

Television news producers perform numerous tasks during their workday, but none is more important than successfully getting their newscast on and off the air at the designated times. Chapter 8: Commanding the Control Room equips aspiring and novice news producers with the strategies needed to complete this essential task. This chapter introduces you to the anatomy of the control room with a focus on the leadership needed from news producers before, during, after a newscast. This chapter gives the type of practical insight and advice that can allow a news producer to confidently create a news rundown with backup plans and successfully booth a local newscast. There is also a section that focuses on navigating breaking news in the control room. This chapter supplies newsroom terms, scenarios, and a control room activity that does not require special equipment.
