ABSTRACT

In the last decades, the PRC has consolidated itself as a superpower that aims to become a “Confucian style hegemon”. This causes regions like LAC, and in particular Central America, to constitute an important stage in this world view. Central America is a particular zone due to its specific characteristics and geographic location. Historically, it has been a sort of socio-political and economic laboratory. Hence, the central thesis of this chapter is that the Chinese presence has effects on the regional governance, because Beijing not only seeks bilateral relations but also has an active participation in regional organizations and regimes. Consequently, the PRC takes on a disruptive role in the Western Hemisphere. This chapter first addresses the relations between superpowers, followed by the “Confucian style” hegemonic project of China. Third, the Sino-Latin American relations in the United States’ backyard are treated. Finally, the chapter discusses the Chinese interests in Central America.
