ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses China–Brazil relations. It first considers the period between the creation of the PRC in 1949 and the establishment of diplomatic relations with Brazil in 1974; then, the period between 1974 until the 1990s, when the basis of the bilateral cooperation has been laid; finally, it examines China’s fast ascension to the top of Brazil’s trade flows, and the establishment of foundations for China’s dynamic presence in the country. The authors tested the concept of strategic partnership in the light of effectiveness in political, economic, scientific and technological cooperation agendas. They concluded that Brazil–China relations have grown steadily without setbacks or serious crises. The astounding growth became one of the most relevant political facts for Brazil’s international insertion in the 21st century. With such growing and diversified presence, China presents to Brazil the relationship of largest potential. The dense and complex path of cooperation throughout the nearly five decades analysed here is evidence that Brazil–China relationship is an emerging model of strategic partnership, which President Bolsonaro is having enormous difficulties to avoid.
