ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with an exploration of what underpins an eclectic approach to coaching supervision. We suggest that a core model of eclectic supervisory practice may seem like a contradiction of terms. If it is eclectic, it must draw upon numerous models and precepts. The chapter talks of a meta-wisdom approach and describes the elements that might underpin this.

It looks at the role of the coach supervisor in this context, and how the practitioner might prepare themselves to work congruently with the approach. It also considers the benefits and limitations of working with an eclectic supervisor, specifically considering the impact of a coach’s level of maturity. It suggests that the purpose of the eclectic supervisor is to ‘hold the coach, while the coach has the conversation that they need to have with themselves’. The chapter closes by looking at what else should be considered before working with the techniques, approaches, enquiries and experiments that follow. In this chapter there are 41 techniques written by 18 different contributors.
