ABSTRACT

The planning initiative of using the land readjustment (LR) in Ahmedabad was unique, because it avoided land acquisition and was completed in record time with the active engagement of planners and land owners including the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority leadership. Ahmedabad has had progressive policies which have benefited the urban poor and slum dwellers in its slum networking initiative. Roads in India in general, and Ahmedabad in particular, have partially developed right of way. The majority of areas in the Ahmedabad metro region were developed using the LR planning process over the past few decades. LR allows the reconfiguration of inaccessible, irregularly shaped land parcels and the carving of land area from the pooled parcels for expanding public infrastructure using local area level layout plans. LR is used in many countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Nepal, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.
