ABSTRACT

One of the newer megacities in China is the city of Wuhan, having reached megacity status in 2016 according to the Hubei Province Bureau of Statistics of China. The landscape of Wuhan is mostly plains, water bodies, and mountains. The region developed slowly at first, but during the Warring States Period, the area was valued as a strategic military location, especially with its proximity to the rivers. The 1954 edition of Wuhan City’s Master Plan was a relatively comprehensive urban plan, serving as an adjustment and supplement to the 1953 Planning Draft and focusing on several key projects under construction in Wuhan at that time. In the 2010 edition of Wuhan City’s Master Plan, the central government implemented the Rise of the Central Region strategy, which approved the Wuhan City Circle as a national “two-oriented society” to build a comprehensive reform pilot zone. An important aspect to forming a livable community is the convenience and accessibility of public transportation.
