ABSTRACT

One of the innovative ways to educate diverse museumgoers is by incorporating live storytelling in the form of performance art and live theatrical shows. This chapter investigates some of the theoretical frameworks and practical strategies to engage museum audiences with socio-political issues through museum theatre. Recent examples from UK and the US museums uncover that performances in museum spaces have a profound impression on museum audiences and generate more visits to the institution. There are many variables to consider when putting together a performance, whether it be a theatrical performance or performance art. For example, will this performance educate, inspire and stimulate dialogue about the topic(s) presented? Will audiences want to come back to experience more of these types of performances in the museum? This chapter explores these questions, highlighting the significance and impact of live storytelling within museum spaces. Theatrical shows and performance art are powerful tools that should be considered by all museums and cultural institutions as a way to invite viewers to reflect on pressing social issues, encourage an open-minded perspective on the way the world is structured today, and inspire audiences to create the world that they want to build.
